Apple announced a new company milestone during its first-quarter earnings results:
the total number of active Apple devices has surpassed 1 billion around the world. This includes iPhones, iPads, Macs, iPods, and Apple Watches.
This is the first time Apple has ever disclosed how many of its devices are in use. The company sold slightly fewer iPhones than analysts expected. “The growth of our services business accelerated during the quarter to produce record results, and our installed base recently crossed a major milestone of one billion active devices," wrote CEO Tim Cook in a statement. The company’s "other products” category, which includes the newly revamped Apple TV and the Apple Watch, saw the best growth this past quarter with a 62 percent year-over-year jump in sales to $4.3 billion.
The iPhone remains the crux of Apple’s business. The company sold 74.78 million iPhones in Q1 2016,
by far the largest contributor to its $18.4 billion in profit on sales
of $75.9 billion. That marks the most profitable quarter of any single
public corporation in history.
